And the award goes to...
So, in case you didn't already know, the Oscars are this Sunday!
Not only am I excited to watch Neil Patrick Harris, but I am also elated to see who will walk away with the biggest award in Hollywood, Best Picture! This is even more thrilling because four history films are nominated, Selma, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything, and American Sniper.
This made me wonder, how many history films have won best picture?
Lets take a look...
- Wings
- All Quiet on the Western Front
- Cavalcade
- Mutiny on the Bounty
- Gone with the Wind
- From Here to Eternity
- The Bridge on the River Kwai
- Gigi
- Ben-Hur
- Lawrence of Arabia
- My Fair Lady
- The Sound of Music
- Patton
- The Godfather
- The Sting
- The Godfather Part II
- Chariots of Fire
- Gandhi
- Amadeus
- Out of Africa
- Platoon
- The Last Emperor
- Driving Miss Daisy
- Dances with Wolves
- Unforgiven
- Schindler's List
- Forest Gump
- Braveheart
- The English Patient
- Titanic
- Gladiator
- A Beautiful Mind
- The Hurt Locker
- The Kings Speech
- The Artist
- Argo
- 12 Years a Slave
Out of 87 Academy Awards 37 are history films. That's about 43%! Also, the last five awards for Best Picture have gone to history films! This is very interesting because it tells us something about the nature of movie makers and moviegoers. While many are predicting Bridman or Boyhood will win Best Picture this Sunday, I am placing my bet on the History Film.
